What is a Hazard Mitigation Plan?

A Hazard Mitigation Plan is a strategic roadmap that helps communities like Franklin County identify potential natural and human-caused hazards and outlines actions to minimize their impact. This plan is designed to protect our residents, businesses, and infrastructure by reducing the risks associated with disasters such as earthquakes, floods, wildfires, and more.

Why does the HMP matter?

Developing a HMP is crucial for several reasons:

  • Protecting Lives and Property: The plan helps us identify and address potential hazards before they cause harm.
  • Cost-Effective Disaster Management: By planning ahead, we can reduce the financial impact of disasters on our community.
  • Securing Federal Assistance: An approved HMP makes Franklin County eligible for certain types of federal funding for disaster recovery and preparedness.
  • Building a Resilient Community: The plan assures we are better prepared to face future challenges and bounce back quickly from disasters.
